YATC unites the artist’s curiosity with a disciplined craft. We have set up multiple peer groups to compliment the actor's level of experience and understanding so their classes will better challenge and support them

Master Class Series

Tailored to the young actor who is professionally working or aspires to be. Acceptance into the Master Class Series requires an audition* to ensure a level of skill and commitment that will both inspire and challenge.

Emerging Artist Series

Empowers students wishing to explore a curiosity for acting. Designed to build self confidence and an ability to communicate autentically, the series nurtures and unseals each artist's greatest asset, their individuality. No audition required*

Seminar Series

One or two day intensive workshops open to all students. Whether demystifying the acting business, auditioning for a top college program, or standing out in a musical theater audition, our mentorship provides vital strategies to achieve these goals. This series will also be an opportunity for the students to meet and network with our “Featured Guest Artists” such as JV Mercanti (Casting Director for Broadway’s Cyrano De Bergerac with Kevin Klein) and other top professionals from the industry including Agents, Casting Directors, Directors, and Photographers.

  • * For students unsure which series to take, it is best to audition so we may lend advice. We believe personal attention engenders a more specific experience, so average class size is 12 students.

"Acting Technique Tool Box”
What’s the difference between real life and Acting? How do great actors make it “seem” so easy and effortless? Why are some performances boring and some riveting? What is talent? Acting is a craft just like gardening, baseball or ballet dancing. Learn the what’s, the why’s and most importantly the how’s to the art of acting. Dive into exercises derived from Master Teachers Uta Hagen and Sanford Meisner that help us find the simple “reality of doing”. We will begin with tools that help you focus and listen, then explore how different circumstances can change every behavior on stage/film. With an emphasis on specificity, you will learn how to approach any character in a rich, vibrant and genuine way. (This class must be taken to qualify for “The Action of Acting”)

10 sessions: (September 9th – November 11th)
Tuesday nights 4:30-6:30 p.m. (Emerging Artist Series)

“Breathing and Voice, The Basics”
The Voice, the number one way we identify who we are, even more than what we look like – we hear ourselves all the time. It is the most frequent and relied upon way we communicate with each other as humans. To breathe, the very first and very last things we’ll do in this world and what we do all the time in between. The breath influences our voice, our emotions, our perspective, our thinking…our life. Yet, these are the two things our traditional school systems do not teach our children how to do efficiently, naturally and in an un-manipulated way. The actor must become a master over both in order to portray a character in a way that is truthful to the play/film, to the human experience and most importantly to oneself. This class initiates such mastery. (This course may need to be repeated if we feel the young actor could benefit from another 10 weeks of this training before entering the next level, we are concerned with you commanding tools rather than just pushing you along.)

10 sessions: (September 10th – November 12th)
Wednesday nights 4:30-6:30 p.m. (Emerging Artist Series)
Wednesday nights 7:00-9:00 p.m. (Master Class Series)

Once this freedom is experienced in the classroom you will be taught how to transform this classroom knowledge into the ability to make more creative, compelling and present-driven moments whether on stage or in front of a camera. A showcase will be presented on the last day for the student’s family and friends.

CLASS ARCHIVE

“The Action of Acting”
Apply the tools your toolbox has acquired. This class puts it all together and is ongoing. Work on scenes that encourage you to play with the tools you’ve learned and those that you already possess. Turn your newly acquired cerebral choices into habitual instincts and discover what it is to be totally “in the moment”.

“Breathing and Voice, The Application”
Behavior and sound is an extension of the character’s experience. That sound, when not manipulated by pre-conceived ideas or the actor's habitual tendencies, will carry on it the character's inner expression. Simply put, the voice will carry the behavior and show with it both work done and clues to the work yet to be done. Through basic text work, we focus more specifically on your breathing habits, phrasing, pausing, lack of thru line or intention that get in the way of connecting you to your role or to yourself. (Completion of “Breathing and Voice, The Basics” is required)

“Breathing and Voice, Advanced”
Next, we develop the skill and confidence it takes to inhabit a large or small space equally with a clear, open resonate sound while being a living, breathing, vibrating human being in movement. Finally, through text in heightened circumstances, we unlock any tendencies towards manipulations and holding in the most challenging of roles. You will have the confidence, by experience, that your voice can fill a space and a character fluidly. Basically, by the end the goal is to have you move, breathe and speak truthfully at the same time in any given circumstance – a tall order for any of us, believe me! (Completion of “Breathing and Voice, The Application” is required. This course may be repeated if desired.)

“Candid Camera”
On camera you will discover, while there are differences between acting for the stage and acting for the camera, there are also amazing similarities! Through the use of commercial, soap opera, TV, and film scripts, we will dive in and find the simple, subtle truthful moments that make films so exhilarating.

“Building an Ensemble”

Challenging a group to think and move as one can be an exhilarating experience. Through games and focus exercises derived from movement masters like Tadashi Suzuki, we will break down barriers that inhibit our ability to sense each other fully. Whether through contact improv which teaches the artist how to play in other’s physical space safely and responsibly, group games that teach us to trust and listen to each other, or percussive explorations that help bind us rhythmically, ensemble building will enhance our ability to make a stronger cast and performance in any production.

“Fearless Auditioning”
An Audition Bootcamp. We will tackle everything from the technical to the creative. What are directors looking for? How do you enter and introduce yourself? How to, in a split second, start a song or monologue in a way that places you truthfully into the given circumstances of the play. Using tools like “the moment before”, “actions”, and always with an emphasis on individuality and specificity, you will have a solid audition technique that doesn’t leave room for “fear”.

“Painless Shakespeare”
Learn how to “activate” Shakespeare’s language in a simple and fun environment. While tackling the fundamentals of rhythm and phonetics, we will create electric “Mob” scenes that will suck you into the world of the play and maybe even, along the way, dispel some pre-conceived notions about the difficulties of Shakespeare!
